There are really no hidden ingredients in Hello Dollies. That is what makes them so attractive. All of the delicious ingredients are just sitting in the pan for you to drool over. Pecans, chocolate chips, coconut and a crumby crust. Yes please!
When I sold them at the last MAVRIK MRKT they were a hot sell because so many people remember themselves eating them as kids. They are also extremely flexible. You like a little more chocolate in your squares Do for it? Want to load on the coconut? You and me both sistah! This ‘aint no fussy souffle recipe.
Pulling together a vegan version of the sweetened condensed milk does add some time to the recipe. But it is totally worth it to keep these squares nice and animal free. Plus, using coconut milk as a substitute makes for a surprisingly pleasurable improvement.
1/2 c. Earth Balance butter substitute
1 c. graham wafer crumbs (honey free)
1 c. coconut
1 c. vegan chocolate chips
1 c. pecans, chopped
vegan sweetened condensed milk:
3/4 can of coconut milk
1/2 c. agave nectar
In a small sauce pan heat the coconut milk and agave nectar until it comes to a low boil. Be careful. It can be a bit lava like. Keep it at the low boil until it is reduced into a syrup that resembles the consistency of sweetened condensed milk. Disclaimer: it takes an f’n long time.
Melt the Earth Balance and then pour it into the bottom of a 9×9 pan. Add ingredients in order given but do not mix. Spread the layers all around a bit to make it even. Bake 325°F for 30 minutes. Remove and enjoy!
